Summary
Cuba spends a pittance on health care, but with an expected 78-year life for both sexes, it is neck and neck with the United States. Two major reason Cubans live longer without flourish are a series of mandatory vaccinations for children and an army of doctors deployed throughout the country. But this achievement of Cuban science signal led to new challenges that the country is facing a rapidly aging population. Young adults have left the country en masse, and those who remain are not reproducing: Cuba is one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, with an average of 9.9 births per 1,000 people. An aging population puts enormous social safety net test of Cuba and its vaunted health care system. Cuban scientists are studying how slow cognitive decline in the elderly and how to turn cancer into a chronic disease with a wide use of therapeutic vaccines.
