Summary

Five stool banks were opened in Europe and the United States since 2012, the last earlier this year in Leiden, the Netherlands. These banks take fresh stool from donors, process, and store it for later use in transplantation of fecal microbiota, a procedure in which doctors seek to restore the normal microbial balance in the intestine of a patient with a dose of stool of a healthy volunteer. Over these banks are in the planning, but their long-term future is not clear. Regulators have yet to decide on how to regulate banks' products and several companies are developing gut microbiome replacements that could, in the long run make banks obsolete stool.
