WASHINGTON - In an unusual gesture campaign to support basic research, the White House is setting aside $ 30 million in new money for breast cancer genetic studies in 1997. President Clinton, surrounded by those responsible for research and breast cancer activists, made the announcement during a photo-op session October 27 in the Rose Garden. The President also unveiled a new government home page on the World Wide Web for information on breast cancer.

Earlier this fall, Congress allocated $ 100 million for research into breast cancer peer reviewed by the Department of Defense (DOD). The White House is basically a Congress upping reserving the hallmark DOD, marking $ 20 million for genetic studies and marking $ 10 million to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the same purpose. These increases will establish the total allocation for research on breast cancer to the two agencies in 1997 to about $ 542 million.

Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, attended the ceremony Rose Garden and approved the Targeted Adjustment side. She said the goal is to "build on the genetic discoveries of the last two years. There is a recognition that science is now there ... and we want to ensure that the programs of NIH and focus on DOD [genetics]. "
