Summary
Researchers are designing the first clinical trials of stem cell therapies for fetuses with bone and rare blood diseases. The tests, still being planned, involving perhaps the most difficult patient population, it is: pregnant women and their fetuses. And although researchers thought that, once the immune system of the fetus would easily accept the foreign cells, they now know that it is not so simple. But some fetuses have been treated on an ad hoc basis, with encouraging results. After decades of dashed hopes raised and, paediatricians, immunologists, and others are cautiously hoping that new biological knowledge and a push for treating parent-to-be could reverse the trend of stem cell therapy prenatal.
