The Ebola epidemic has already devastated the weak public health systems and childhood vaccinations disturbed Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Therefore, unless measures are taken quickly, preventable childhood diseases are likely to soar. Measles, in particular, is considered a sentinel of a broken health care system, often hitting early and hard after a disaster. In an article in this week's issue of Science , researchers have some numbers that give to think about the size of a possible outbreak of measles in the post-Ebola region. In the worst case, they warn, a measles epidemic could kill thousands more people than the Ebola virus.
