outbreaks A little-known virus called Zika caused in the Pacific ocean islands in recent years and arrived in South America this year. Scientists predict that spread throughout the Western Hemisphere, and perhaps in southern Europe as well, because Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the virus are so prevalent. Scientifically speaking, the Zika virus is still largely terra incognita. Its symptoms, including rash, fatigue, headache, muscle aches and swollen and painful joints, seem to be generally mild, but during an outbreak in French Polynesia, which began in 2013, some patients developed an affection severe neurological called Guillain-Barre syndrome.
