Summary

Researchers working on ways to trace DNA circulating in the blood of the tissue from which it originated. This DNA shed by dying cells, normal and injured, could provide a way to detect the early stages of a disease or to track its progress. An Israeli research groups reporting this week that his technique to trace the origin of circulating DNA detected the expected type of cell death in people with pancreatic cancer, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis plaques and brain damage. Other groups have reported encouraging results for cancers. Published works only prove the concept; DNA techniques flowing still need to be tested on a large scale. Yet studies suggest that monitoring DNA through blood could be a powerful way to monitor diseases.
