Summary

Jeremy Farrar took the head of the Wellcome Trust, the second largest private funder of the world of medical research, in October 2013. Three months later, the largest Ebola epidemic the world has ever seen started. Farrar, an infectious disease specialist with lots of experience working in poor countries, has become a key voice in the epidemic. He chided the world for not acting more decisively; lobbied for experimental therapies available; and by the Wellcome Trust has funded research in West Africa, including vaccine trial in Guinea, which for the first time showed protection against Ebola virus in humans. The outbreak prompted Farrar and the Wellcome Trust in the international arena. Farrar intends to stay there, but it also plans to make it more dynamic, we give young scientists a leg, closer coordination with another giant of Public Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and to focus on areas where Wellcome can have a big impact.
