Summary

Over the past year, several groups had independently liquidlike droplets formed by proteins in test tubesand in cells, and four articles on the unusual phenomenon just been published in Cell and Molecular Cell . Already, the researchers suggest that droplet formation is a key element of the mechanism regulating the expression of genes in cells. When the process goes wrong, they suggest, it can also lead to aggregatethat solid protein are a hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases. Steve McKnight, a biochemist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, suggests that biologists are on the verge of something profound. "We see the first glimpses of ... a whole new understanding of how the cells are organized."
