This Kind of Drowning Happens After the pool
Did you know that you or your child may experience the same symptoms of drowning hours after leaving the water? This may sound crazy, but the secondary drowning is often unrecognized health problem that may occur after spending time at the pool or other water bodies. Nurse Rose Melendez, RN, director of the emergency department and the administration of nursing at Adventist Hospital Adventist HealthCare Washington tells us all we need to know. 
What is the secondary drowning
Nurse Rose: secondary drowning is a breathing problem that occurs hours after 'I left the water when you accidentally breathed water into your lungs while spending time in the water.

Nurse Rose: It can happen in adults, but is more common in children because of their small size. This occurs when the airway of a child opens leaving water in his lungs, where it accumulates, causing difficulty breathing.
How do I know if my child knows the secondary drowning?
Nurse Rose :. If your child was playing in the pool and you think they might have swallowed some water, watch out for the following symptoms
- Coughing
- chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- feeling tired or lethargic
You will also notice a change in the behavior of your child because he or she is not receiving enough oxygen brain
What should I do if I notice these symptoms
nurse Rose.? Call 911 or take your child immediately to the emergency department. Changes in behavior may not seem dramatic, but it is important to check. There, your child will be monitored and may receive medication to help eliminate fluid from the body.
