South Korean Court Reduces Hwang's Sentence -

South Korean researcher Woo Suk Hwang Disgraced had his sentence confirmed yesterday by a court of appeal in South Korea, which hit six months off the suspended sentence of Hwang.

The action of the court means Hwang should not serve time in prison if he remains in trouble for 2 years. He was convicted last year of fraud and embezzlement and was sentenced to 2 years suspended for 3 years. government prosecutors had sought a sentence of 4 years.

Both Hwang and the prosecution appealed the sentence last year, and each has one week to appeal the latest decision.

Hwang stunned the scientific world when he said in two articles published in Science in 04 and 05 that he had cloned human embryos. These claims unraveled in late 05, when it became obvious that the key images in the papers had been duplicated. Science retracted both papers. Hwang later admitted pretending to data for the paper look better, but said a colleague tricked him into thinking that cell lines were authentic.

Hwang would always work on animal cloning at a private research facility outside of Seoul.
