U.S. Stem Cell Trial Treats First Patient -

The first US clinical trial approved the use of human embryonic stem cells to treat disease scored his first patient. Geron Corp., which sponsored the trial using stem cells for spinal cord injuries, announced yesterday that the patient was treated in an Atlanta hospital. Patients in the study received an injection of stem cells at the injury site of the spinal cord within 2 weeks after injury. The small trial is a safety study, but as The Washington Post notes, the researchers will also test to see if they benefit from the therapy. The US Food and Drug Administration approved the trial in January 09, but later suspended because of security concerns; FDA lifted the hold in July.
