NIH Trims Grants in Wake of Budget Cuts -

The American biomedical researchers must tighten their belts because of the 1% decline in the National Institutes of Health's 2011 budget ( NIH) which became law two weeks ago.

Notice yesterday NIH explains that, after "nearly 1 percent" reduction in what the NIH received in 2010, the agency will reduce 1% of current subsidies the level of 2010. Some researchers will face even deeper cuts. the National cancer Institute plans to cut current subsidies of 3%

According to previous opinion, the recent budget increases 1% to 3% allowed NIH grants to develop a comparable amount. the last cut (2.9%) was in 07. and NIH expects to increase the average size of its grants 2% if Congress approves the application the president's budget for 2012.

regarding the new and competing grants NIH expects to make 050 prices, compared to 9386 in 2010 as requested by the 2012 NIH budget.

There is better news for postdocs and graduate students supported by NIH Kirschstein national Award for research. Their allocations are up 2% this year.
