Summer Allergies
When you think of summer allergies, you may immediately think of pollen. However, Dr. Rachel Schreiber, allergist at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, notes that there are other allergies that can break during the summer.
Two elements in particular are sunscreen and bug spray.
"people who have sensitive skin may be more sensitive to the chemicals in sunscreen," said Dr. Schreiber. "If you have sensitive skin or have had problems with sunscreens causing rashes in the past, look for ingredients that are" physical blockers. "
She said to look specifically for screens solar which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These are sunscreens white paste that you may have seen on the rescuers there for years. Now, the substances are micronized, so they clearly apply.
Regarding insect repellent, the most effective repellent is DEET. Unlike a sunscreen, which can be applied several times a day, DEET can be applied only once.
"When applying DEET, it can go on the skin and on your clothes. However, do not put it on the skin under clothing," said Dr. Schreiber. "For example, if you wear shorts, applying DEET to the skin on your legs, but your thighs, as the shorts cover the skin, apply DEET to your clothing. "
she explained that the repellent can become too concentrated if is applied under clothing.
Dr. Schreiber recently gave an update of the allergy season in an interview with WTOP Radio (103.5 FM).
