Proposed Law Would Make NIH Less "Open" -

A controversial bill on open access is back on the agenda of the Congress. The bill would undermine the US National Institutes of Health requirement that beneficiaries provide NIH with a copy of their articles peer-reviewed, NIH that makes freely available online on PubMed Central database. Representative John Conyers (D-MI), chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the House, initially proposed the bill last fall, when he received a hearing and attention. He reintroduced this week.

The bill is again provoke strong reactions from both sides of the issue. Supporters argue that the current policy of the NIH hurts the protection of copyright publishers. Critics say it does nothing of the kind and provides a much needed public access to the results of research funded by the federal government instead.
