Myth or reality: Scarves help prevent colds
A new Yale University study suggests the key to preventing colds can be to cover your nose! Using eg a scarf to keep warm your nose, could help reduce the breeding ground for the most current cold, rhinovirus. This is due to rhinovirus being able to replicate more easily in the colder environment of the nasal cavity in the warmer environment of the lungs.
Unlike previous studies, this research investigated the relationship between temperature and the immune response, rather than focusing on how the body temperature affects the virus. Yale Researchers examined cells taken from the airways of mice, comparing the immune response to core body temperature, or 37 degrees Celsius, and a cooler 33 degrees Celsius.
"We found that the innate immune response to the rhinovirus is altered to lower body temperature from the core body temperature," said Akiko Iwasaki, senior author of the study and Yale professor of immunobiology. "In general, the higher the temperature, it seems more the innate immune response to the virus," Iwasaki noted.
So could wear a scarf actually help you prevent getting a cold? Dr. Terry Jodrie, emergency physician at Adventist HealthCare Adventist Hospital in Washington, said that, at best, the data is mixed. His advice? "Get plenty of rest, do not smoke, sneeze into your elbow, and wash your hands often." Your nose, eyes and mouth are the most likely places for germs to enter your body. "Keep your hands away from your face is a good practice," said Dr. Jodrie.
