The Odds of Winning NIH Stimulus Money -

The frenzy that began when scientists went after $ 10.4 billion in stimulus funding for National Institutes of Health seems to have given up to more normal grant-seeking behavior. Last NIH stimulus contest for Grand Opportunities (GO) grants attracted more than 2400 letters of intent, NIH Director Raynard Kington Acting said today at a hearing of a Senate spending panel. It expects 00 monitoring applications deadline late May.

This response is tiny compared to 20,000 applications for challenge grants, 15,000 examiners are now rushing to assess. GO grants are bigger- $ 1 million is the floor rather than the ceiling, because it is price challenge and it is not known how many NIH awards will. But the success rate will be much higher, up to 10% rather than 2% bad that can happen to the prices of the Challenge. Meanwhile, scientists who have an entirely different way and opted to extend an existing grant, known as a competitive review, lucky. NIH received approximately only 1,0 applications, and from what budget document will fund about 0 of them for a success rate of over 30%.

At the hearing today, the primary concern of the President, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) was the "cliff" NIH edge may soon face is how the agency will help scientists after spending stimulus money, the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 09 says should be done in October 2010. "perhaps we might want to think about making an exception for the NIH," said Harkin said, suggesting four years might make more sense. Kington says NIH can spend the money "responsible" in 2 years, but "having greater flexibility would probably be useful."
