Preparation of Back-to-School

It's back to school time! The first day of the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) School 2013-2014 is Monday, August 26. As you may already have books and crayons in order, is your child's checkup for school?

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene requires that all children receive certain vaccines before the school year. These vaccines help keep your children safe and healthy. Requirements vary by age and may include vaccination against diseases such as measles, polio, tetanus and mumps.

The higher immunization rates help protect the entire community.

According to Dr. Avni Jain, primary care physician at Adventist Medical Group, vaccinations are a cornerstone of health maintenance.

"There are two sets of recommended vaccines for children of school age. The first series should be administered at four to six years, and the second at 11 or 12 years," says Dr. Jain. "in addition, the vaccine against influenza is recommended annually for all children older than six months."

Dr. Jain suggests reconsidering the vaccination of every doctor visit record to determine which vaccinations are necessary. it also notes that delaying or declining childhood immunization can present serious health risk not only the child concerned, but also to the population as a whole.

"one advantage key public health vaccination is called "herd immunity," or the fact that higher vaccination rates offer protection to the wider community by reducing the risk of an outbreak of disease to occur, "says Dr. Jain

MCPS requires the students from 9 to 12 perform a physical pre-participation each year, while students from 7 to 8 must complete a medical assessment every two years.

Other children who will be required to have a physical include those entering MCPS for the first time or those who change from a private school. Annual physical exams are a good time for you and your child to discuss health problems or problems with your doctor.

In addition to submitting all required health forms at school, parents should let their child's school aware of any allergy reactions, medications or chronic diseases such as diabetes and 'asthma.
