Stroke Awareness Month

Did you know that 80% of all strokes are preventable? Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the fifth most common cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. Spread awareness recognizing the American Stroke Month each year in May. See below the American Stroke Association for advice on warning signs of stroke. If you suspect someone is suffering from a stroke, call 911 immediately.

Stroke Facts

  • A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts.
  • as a result of lack of oxygen, nearly 2 million brain cells die each minute a stroke goes untreated.
  • stroke can be caused either by a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain (called an ischemic stroke) or a blood vessel breaks and prevent blood flow to the brain (called an accident hemorrhagic stroke).
  • a TIA (transient ischemic attack), or "mini-stroke" is caused by a temporary clot.

Risk factors for stroke

  • Age
  • family background
  • stroke
  • Gender
  • previous personal history

There . certain risk factors that can be modified, treated or controlled These risks include:

  • hypertension
  • high cholesterol diet high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol
  • smoking
  • Amount. physical activity
  • obesity
