This is safe for baby's skin?
There is nothing sweeter than the smooth, soft skin of a baby. But as much as we love snuggling and feel our baby, we do not always think about the ingredients we put on their skin.
"The skin is an organ that absorbs whatever chemicals are in soap or lotion you put on you or your baby," says Dr. Laurie Herscher, who runs the program integrative medicine at Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center. "Unfortunately, many of these chemicals may be unhealthy for our bodies."
Although this can be a scary thought for parents, do not worry. it's easy to find healthy products for small on. Lots of great options and resources are available.
Here are some tips that can help you navigate the confusing world of ingredient lists .
Go slowly.
There is no need to become an overnight expert on the ingredients in some of your favorite product for babies. Start small reading some items, verification of reliable websites and talk with knowledgeable experts, including your pediatrician. You're already on your way with just this short article! If you are looking for a place to start, be aware of these ingredients:
- Phthalates
- Parabens
- Fragrance
- triclosan
another great resource is EWG.org, the Environmental Working Group. Skin deep is a special section of its website that offers reviews of over 60,000 personal care and household products. Their researchers looked closely at the ingredients and products assigned a rating of 1-10, one being the best and 10 being the worst. This is a simple and easy to use tool to help you get a better idea of what to look for in skin care products.
Minimize your "total body burden."
It is impossible to cut every single chemical of your daily life. That's why some researchers recommend focusing on your "total body burden," the sum of all the chemicals you are exposed to every day. Reduce exposure where you can. For example, if you need to use soap with triclosan, make sure it is fragrance free and phthalate, and seek to cut chemicals from other products commonly used as detergents, shampoo or lotion.
Be a smart sunscreen.
Did you know there are two types of sunscreen? physical sunscreens create a barrier between our skin and the sun with minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Chemical sunscreens use ingredients that are absorbed into the skin and could be harmful. When shopping for sunscreen as the weather warms up, try one with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the active ingredient listed. Also, if you use sunscreen spray, be aware that the FDA is beginning to examine the safety of these products for children, who may inhale the spray.
As always, talk to your child's doctor if you have any questions that sunscreens and skin products are the best.
