Aortic and mitral valve disease treatment options -

If you view your body as a machine, each part working to keep the whole function effectively. Your heart valves do important work, opening and closing to keep the blood flowing in the right direction. But if a valve is not working properly, it can cause stress on the body and the heart itself

The heart is a muscle -. And a muscle to work hard at that. If a valve does not close properly or if it does not open wide enough to allow blood to pass easily through a faulty valve can force your heart to work harder and longer-stress your heart. Fortunately, there are options for treatment.

How do heart valves work?

Your heart has four chambers or sections, which beat in time to keep the blood flowing throughout your body. Each room has a flap valve which opens to let blood flow to the front and close to stop blood from flowing backward.

The valves in your heart can become narrow or leak. If this happens, you may have symptoms such as:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest Pain
  • Fatigue, or feeling very tired
  • Coughing (may be dry or with blood)
  • swelling in your feet or ankles
  • Anxiety
  • heart palpitations, or feeling like your heart beats or floating
  • fainting
  • heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias)

Types of heart Valve

It is always best to talk with your doctor if you have one of the symptoms listed above, because this could be a sign of a disease of the valve such as:

  • aortic valve stenosis
  • mitral valve regurgitation
  • mitral stenosis

What is aortic stenosis?

your aorta is your biggest artery, and your aortic valve opens and closes to allow blood to flow from your heart into your aorta. Then the blood flows from your aorta outside your body.

Aortic stenosis occurs when your aortic valve does not open wide enough to allow enough blood to flow through it. This makes your heart work harder, which can weaken your heart and lead to heart failure over time.

What is mitral regurgitation?

Your mitral valve is located between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of your heart. It opens and closes to let the blood flow from the upper chamber to the lower chamber.

mitral valve regurgitation occurs when the valve does not close tightly and blood leaks into the upper chamber.

What is mitral valve stenosis?

mitral stenosis occurs when the mitral valve does not open wide enough to let enough blood through it.

how valvular disease treated?

treating diseases valves depends on the state, how serious it is and what symptoms you experience.

open heart and minimally invasive cardiac surgery

heart surgery is a common treatment option, because the valves generally need to be repaired to run correctly. Surgery may be:

  • open heart, where a surgeon opens your chest for repair
  • minimally invasive where a surgeon does not open your chest and instead uses a thin, flexible tube (called a catheter) or a robotic device to repair

robotic cardiac surgery

in some cases, robotic surgery can be used to repair the mitral valve. In robotic surgery, a surgeon uses a robotic device which comprises a camera and surgical instruments for repairing the valve. Robotic surgery uses an incision much smaller than open heart surgery, and generally means a faster recovery time for the patient.
