Summary

Two biomedical research institutes leading in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa has announced their intention to merge and form the African Institute of health research. One partner, the African Centre for Population Health, has long focused on epidemiological and population studies. Its funder is the Wellcome Trust. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute founded the second partner, the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV. The Health Research Institute in Africa is a new lease on life for the two institutes in difficulty, considering combining their clinical and basic research skills to tackle big research questions in HIV and tuberculosis. The Wellcome Trust is eventually expected to take over, but for now, the two philanthropies support the effort.
