Feeling the winter blues?

We often hear of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases. The fight against these physical health problems is undeniably important, but what about mental health?

We tend to overlook the importance of mental well-being, forgetting that affects the physical well-being. We must be especially aware of this during the winter months. While winter brings fun in the snow, it can also be cold and dreary. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may occur due to weather, causing a slow movement and lethargic behavior. This form of depression occurs as a result of the change of season and can last all winter.

SAD or not, it is important to be active and ensure a balance in your daily life. Consider incorporating, healthy balance practices in your day job. Go on a walk during your lunch break. The UV rays stimulate your body to make vitamin D and exercise causes your body to release endorphins, or "feel good hormones". Set manageable goals and use your time wisely. If symptoms persist, seek professional advice, as SAD can be treated. Do not let the cold get you down, take a winter sport or plan a fun activity with friends or family. These activities can help you not only survive, but enjoy the winter months!

Did you know?

  • The severity of SAD depends on several factors, including geography and vulnerability.
  • SAD is more common among those who live far north or south of the equator due to the decrease of the sun during the winter months.
  • 3 of 4 people with SAD are women.
  • over the seasons change, so do our biological clocks because of sunlight patterns.
  • Melatonin, which is produced at increased levels in the dark, is related to the cause of SAD.
