Summary

Autoimmune diseases share a dark similarity with cancer: the people's own cells become their enemies. But a study published online in Science reveals a parallel happy, suggesting that a therapy designed to harness the immune system to attack cancer cells can also break down the turncoat immune cells behind autoimmune diseases . The approach is based on T cells of the chimeric antigen receptor, or CAR T cells: immune cells genetically modified to home on a desired target on cancer cells or in this case on the rogue B cells, another type of immune cell. The new study gauged the car T cell capacities in the food laboratory and in mouse models of pemphigus vulgaris, an autoimmune disease in which B cells produce antibodies that attack a protein in the skin and mucous membranes. But some scientists are already calling the approach that specifically aims errant B cells, a breakthrough.
