Am I at risk for peripheral arterial disease?

An estimated 25 million Americans are at risk vascular disease, a condition that results from narrowing of the arteries or veins that carry blood throughout the body. One of the most common vascular conditions is peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects 8 to 12,000,000 Americans, according to the Foundation of vascular disease.

Dr. Jeffrey Wang, vascular surgeon and medical director for vascular research at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, says PAD occurs when peripheral arteries, most often in the legs or pelvis, are narrowed or blocked by plaque.

"If left untreated, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, gangrene and amputation," says Dr. Wang.

Often the symptoms of PAD go unnoticed or are misinterpreted for something else. However, if you have PAD, you may experience:

  • Leg pain that does not go away after stopping exercise
  • non-healing or healing of wounds foot slow or toe
  • Decrease the temperature of the leg or foot over the other leg and rest of your body

Dr. Wang said some people are more at risk for CSA development, including those who smoke, people with diabetes or those with high blood pressure or cholesterol.

"You can reduce your risk of PAD by teaching your family history, maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise," says Dr. Wang. "If you think you are at risk or experiencing symptoms, you should talk with your doctor. "

vascular ultrasound Laboratory at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital provides non-invasive vascular ultrasound to detect PAD and other vascular disorders. Ultrasonics are able to find a narrowing or blockages by measuring blood flow with sound waves.

Shady Hospital Grove Adventist also a multidisciplinary center for wound care using advanced medicine to treat non-healing or wound healing slow such as those caused by PAD.
